In September, the SDG Summit 2024 was held in New York, bringing together world leaders, companies, and NGOs to assess the performance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) so far and discuss the steps needed to achieve the targets set for 2030.
Where Do We Stand?
According to official reports, the progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) could be faster. Globally, only 16% of the SDG targets are on track to be achieved by 2030. The remaining 84% show limited progress or even setbacks
„We must invest in sustainability like never before" - emphasized UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the summit, urging urgent action from the event's participants.
Therefore, the main objective of the SDG Summit 2024 was to mobilize greater resources from every country to achieve the SDGs, as several critical voices highlighted that the current financing approach is insufficient
Quo vadis SDGs?
The „Pact for the Future” document is the key outcome of the SDG Summit 2024, outlining commitments to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 agenda. The main points of the document are as follows:
- Action for Sustainable Development: Ambitious steps to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals with a particular focus on eradicating poverty and hunger.
- Financial Gaps: Addressing the critical funding gaps for the SDGs is paramount.
- Climate Action: The document emphasizes urgent measures to combat climate change, preserve biodiversity, and restore ecosystems.
- Gender Equality: The Pact for the Future places significant emphasis on achieving gender equality and eliminating violence and discrimination against women and girls.
- Global Governance and Peace: The Pact strengthens multilateral institutions such as the UN, enabling them to respond to emerging global challenges, including threats to peace and security. It also stresses the need for international cooperation in areas such as technology, innovation, and youth engagement.
